Rob Knutsen BSc Phd (Cape Town)

Research Interests

Research is principally centred on understanding and predicting the evolution of microstructures in metallic materials, with particular emphasis on light metals (aluminium and titanium alloys) and stainless steels. The research focus is divided between process development (hot rolling) and alloy development, and broad topics include:

Special Experimental Techniques

Electron backscattered diffraction (EBSD) analysis is used extensively for investigating the microstructural condition of deformed and recrystallised metallic materials. In addition, the determination of microtexture and bulk texture is performed to investigate the plastic anisotropy of sheet metals. The Centre is well equipped with a HKL EBSD system and up-to-date acquisition and analysis software.
