The research covers selective laser melting (SLM) of different types of metallic powders with a focus on Ti alloys. The studying of the fatigue properties of Ti-based parts produced by SLM will form a large part of the study. In particular fracture toughness and fatigue crack growth rate experiments will be performed. Fatigue properties are related to the microstructure, the porosity, residual stresses and surface finishing of the envisaged parts, all of which will be investigated. Material properties will also be monitored. The research covers an important part of a large 5-year project, presently running at the Catholic University of Leuven, Belgium..
