Weldability limits for creep aged material are dependent on the microstructure (precipitates and damage / dislocations), the welding processes applied and the intended operation time and conditions. Eskom is removing large quantities of creep aged and creep damaged material that can be used to develop “quick” and cost effective techniques to assess life consumed in the welding ligament, determine weldability limits (damage and properties vs. time to failure) and develop welding procedures to be applied on creep damaged material. Creep life estimate models (FEM) for the friction stir plug welding technique can be developed and calibrated with actual tests to qualify weldability limits.
