Mechanical and microstructural characterisation of Ti6Al4V alloy produced by the selective laser melting (SLM) at different scanning speeds
Different SLM scanning parameters can result in distinct microstructures and hence different mechanical properties. The sole purpose for SLM process is to minimise machining time and therefore less material waste especially for special metals like titanium, but SLM is characterised by high temperature gradients which induces residual stresses which results in brittle products. In this project, the effect of scanning speed on the microstructure and the corresponding mechanical properties is investigated and suitable post heat treatments, to align the SLM Ti6Al4V alloy properties with the wrought/cast titanium alloys.
