Ti-6Al-4V is a Titanium alloy which has incredible mechanical properties including an extremely high Strength-to-density ratio. Unfortunately the high cost of Titanium alloys has prevented their widespread use across industry. My project is aimed at investigating the possibility of generating a high-quality but cheap stock of Ti-6Al-4V by utilising a cost effective sintering process which results in a porous material and then improving the density of this sintered material by compressing it at high temperature.
The material that we manage to produce using this process will be evaluated by taking measurements of relative density as well as conducting mechanical tests using micro specimens made from the compressed material. We are hoping to accurately measure the tensile behaviour of the material as well as the fracture toughness.
