Hydrogen was used as a temporary alloying element in a stable wrought Ti-6Al-4V alloy since it is capable of lowering the  transus temperature and refining the microstructure of the alloy in turn improving the overall mechanical properties. The phase transformation behaviour was observed before, during and after hydrogenation by using a push-rod dilatometer.

The existing push rod dilatometer was modified in order to act as a dual functioning dilatometer and hydrogen furnace. The thermo hydrogen processing (THP) was used in order to alter the phase transformation kinetics and transformation temperatures and produced various micro structures differing from that of the convention heat treatments of Ti-6Al-4V.
